U.S. Future Leaders Topical Seminar on Cybersecurity

 


We are excited to announce the next virtual U.S. Future Leaders Topical Seminar for alumni of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program.

This two-day virtual seminar will bring together at least 50 Gilman alumni to advance their leadership skills and expertise in Cybersecurity. The seminar is intended for alumni who have already completed their undergraduate program and have gained, or hope to gain, employment in the Cybersecurity field and are looking to develop their skills and expertise to become future leaders in Cybersecurity. Attendees will engage with industry leaders and fellow alumni during seminar sessions, break out-groups, and a virtual networking reception.

To apply to attend this virtual seminar, please complete this application by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on January 18, 2021. By submitting this application, you are confirming your availability and intention to virtually attend the entire seminar (all sessions, both days) if you are accepted. 

We anticipate a high level of interest in this opportunity and your confirmation for this event means other alumni will not be able to participate in this virtual opportunity. Accepted alumni who are no longer able to attend the seminar should alert IIE immediately by sending an email to gilmanscholars@iie.org. Accepted alumni who do not attend the full two-day seminar and do not give IIE advance notice of at least one week will not be invited to future Gilman alumni activities. The only exceptions are in the event of extenuating circumstances, including, but not limited to, medical reasons. 

This U.S. Future Leaders Topical Seminar focuses on deepening leadership skills and expertise needed to become a leader in the field of Cybersecurity. This virtual seminar will help you:

  • Advance your understanding of Cybersecurity and the domestic importance of Cybersecurity;
  • Learn about the ways you can contribute to solving challenges that are associated with Cybersecurity;
  • Position yourself to engage in careers and opportunities that address Cybersecurity in both broad and specific ways;
  • Strengthen your leadership skills and gain specific, lifelong tools for your success;
  • Gain practical guidance on how you can gain employment or strengthen your existing career and professional trajectory in areas related to Cybersecurity;
  • Strengthen your identity as a leader in Cybersecurity by connecting with current public- and private-sector professionals in substantive ways; and
  • Increase your exposure to other educational and career opportunities.
Schedule:  The seminar will begin virtually via Zoom on Thursday, January 28 at 10:45 a.m. Eastern Time and conclude after a virtual networking reception that will end at approximately 6:40 p.m. Eastern Time. The second day will begin virtually via Zoom on Friday, January 29 at 10:45 a.m. Eastern Time and conclude at approximately 4:55 p.m. Eastern Time. (A time zone map is available here if helpful.)

Tentative agenda to include the following sessions:
  • Managing Technology Amongst Constant Change:  learn how complex cybersecurity issues are managed by large organizations
  • Toward Cyberpeace:  learn about initiatives underway to answer big questions around Cybersecurity, including what is the best we can hope for in terms of "peace" on the Internet, and how might we be able to get there
  • Breakout Sessions on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cybersecurity:  engage in discussion with professionals in the fields regarding topics such as AI and the Future of Work; AI for Cybersecurity; Governing AI; Tech, Privacy, & COVID; Economics of Cybersecurity; Cybersecurity Governance from a National Security Perspective; Supply Chain Perspective; and Trust-in Information & Data
  • A Virtual Site Visit and Q&A with representatives from the Lyft Level 5 Autonomous Vehicle Lab:  learn about the initiative, implications, and opportunities
  • Personal Leadership-Self-Awareness, Personality & Values: learn how to define your personal leadership style and interact with others based on your style*
  • Diplomacy, Security, and Governance:  learn about the risk and cultural impact of technology policy around the world and its impact on diplomacy and governance
  • Legislating Cyberspace- Data Protection, Cybersecurity & Internet Governance:  learn about the interplay of internet governance and Cybersecurity
  • Cyber Statecraft Challenge:  engage in a hands-on challenge with a team of fellow seminar participants to gain a deeper understanding of the policy and strategy challenges associated with management tradeoffs during a cyber crisis

*Attendees will be able to take the Keirsey Temperament Sorter for free and have access to their results for the sessions on Personal Leadership. Additionally, alumni who attend and participate both days of the seminar will receive 3 specially selected books and a digital credential they can post on LinkedIn after the seminar.
Selection Criteria
Applications will be assessed by the following criteria:

  • Applicant’s interest and/or experience in the topic
  • Impact of the seminar on the applicant's professional goals
  • Applicant's plans to use knowledge and skills gained from the seminar
  • Applicant's ability to attend the entire two-day seminar
*Preference will be given to alumni with academic or professional experience in the Cybersecurity field and alumni who have not previously attended a U.S. Future Leaders Topical Seminar.

Eligibility
Gilman alumni are eligible to attend this seminar if they have already graduated from their undergraduate program and have completed the following requirements of the Gilman Program, which are:

  • Complete your study/internship abroad program
  • Complete the Re-Entry survey in the Gilman alumni portal
Technology Requirements
  • You must have reliable internet access and a laptop/desktop/tablet with a web camera. (A smart phone is not recommended.)
  • You must be able to virtually attend and actively participate in all seminar sessions (including the networking reception) for both days.
  • If you log off early or do not attend a session, you will not be invited to future Gilman Alumni seminars.*Please contact us at gilmanscholars@iie.org if you have an extenuating circumstance.

Preference will be given to alumni with academic or professional experience in the Cybersecurity field and alumni who have not previously attended a U.S. Future Leaders Topical Seminar.
