Dear Colleagues,

The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), brings early career educators from all over the world to U.S. host institutions for an academic year, where they teach or assist in teaching their language and share their culture. In hosting FLTAs, colleges and universities gain a source of support to their language programs and offer coursework to these international students. The FLTAs gain a better understanding of U.S. culture and acquire further professional skills. With the FLTA Program, host institutions can offer an additional language and cultural resource to their students, expand curricula, and further internationalize the campus environment.

We fully understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has created much uncertainty in the field of higher education and may pose a significant challenge to your ability to predict language program needs for the coming academic year. However, in planning for the year ahead, the Institute of International Education (IIE) asks for your assistance in forecasting interest among U.S. colleges and universities for potentially hosting Fulbright FLTAs in AY 2021-2022. Any feedback you can provide will aid IIE in reporting back to the program sponsor and our overseas Fulbright partners on the needs and interests of U.S. colleges and universities during this unique time. Please note: This is just an interest survey. The host application will launch in late October to mid-November.

All host institutions seeking to host FLTAs must provide a tuition and fees waiver for two courses per semester (or one course per quarter) in which the FLTAs will be engaged as students, though coursework can be offered on an audit basis. In the case of some languages, financial support beyond the tuition and fees waiver is requested. Please carefully read the descriptions included for each question, which clarify requested financial support. For details, you can also visit the following website or contact us directly:

Please select the languages that your institution is interested in hosting. Please note that the presence of a language in the list below is not a guarantee that there will be available Fulbright candidates in that language.
