U.S. Future Leaders Topical Seminar on Global Health

 


We are excited to announce the final virtual U.S. Future Leaders Topical Seminar for alumni of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program.

This two-day virtual seminar will bring together up to 80 Gilman alumni to advance their leadership skills and position them for careers in Global Health. The seminar is intended for alumni who are current undergraduates, recent graduates (within the past two years), or have gained (or hope to gain) employment in the Global Health field and are looking to develop their skills and expertise to become future leaders in Global Health. Attendees will engage with industry leaders and fellow alumni during seminar sessions, break out-groups, and a virtual networking reception.

To apply to attend this virtual seminar, please complete this application by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on May 2, 2021. By submitting this application, you are confirming your availability and intention to virtually attend the entire seminar (all sessions, both days) if you are accepted. 

We anticipate a high level of interest in this opportunity and your confirmation for this event means other alumni will not be able to participate in this virtual opportunity. Accepted alumni who are no longer able to attend the seminar should alert IIE immediately by sending an email to gilmanscholars@iie.org. Accepted alumni who do not attend the full two-day seminar and do not give IIE advance notice of at least one week will not be invited to future Gilman alumni activities. The only exceptions are in the event of extenuating circumstances, including, but not limited to, medical reasons. 

This U.S. Future Leaders Topical Seminar focuses on deepening leadership skills and expertise needed to become a leader in the field of Global Health. This virtual seminar will help you:

  • Advance your understanding of Global Health and the domestic importance of Global Health;
  • Learn about the ways you can contribute to solving challenges that are associated with Global Health;
  • Position yourself to engage in careers and opportunities that address Global Health in both broad and specific ways;
  • Strengthen your leadership skills and gain specific, lifelong tools for your success;
  • Gain practical guidance on how you can gain employment or strengthen your existing career and professional trajectory in areas related to Global Health;
  • Strengthen your identity as a leader in Global Health by connecting with current public- and private-sector professionals in substantive ways; and
  • Increase your exposure to other educational and career opportunities.
Schedule:  The seminar will begin virtually via Zoom on Thursday, May 13 at 10:45 a.m. Eastern Time and conclude after a virtual networking reception that will end at approximately 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. There will be an optional activity from 8:00-9:00 p.m. Eastern Time that evening. The second day will begin virtually via Zoom on Friday, May 14 at 10:45 a.m. Eastern Time and conclude at approximately 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time. (A time zone map is available here if helpful.)

Tentative agenda to include the following sessions:
  • Making a Global Health Difference: Hear from Dr. Boris Lushniak, Dean at the University of Maryland's School of Public Health. Prior to his current role, Dean Lushniak served as both U.S. Deputy Surgeon General and as Acting Surgeon General. He was responsible for the release of the 50th Anniversary Surgeon General's Report on Smoking and Health and the first-ever Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer.  
  • Cultural Competency and the Applied Experience (2 sessions): Learn about cultural competency through a panel discussion with individuals who have recent experience in the Peace Corps, Global Health Corps, and Fulbright and a policy memo activity on global access to COVID-19 vaccines and the correlations to "Bad Habits of Design." 
  • U.S. Department of State Opportunities and Non-Competitive Eligibility (NCE): Hear about additional U.S. Department of State opportunities for Gilman alumni and learn about NCE.
  • Virtual Networking Reception: Network with individuals from the two Cultural Competency sessions, University of Maryland faculty, representatives from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of  Educational and Cultural Affairs, and fellow alumni in breakout rooms.
  • Optional Activity: Attend a global dance performance and learn a short dance routine.
  • Virtual Walking Tour: Participate in a self-guided interactive walking tour via videos of the University of Maryland-Baltimore graduate and professional programs in Health Sciences. This tour will expose you to the diverse paths available in achieving a global health career.
  • Breakout Sessions- Achieving Your Professional Goals in Global Health:  Learn about the elements needed to stand out for a successful application to graduate and professional schools, what various opportunities exist to gain more international experience, and what careers are available within non-governmental organizations, government, and health agencies. 
Selection Criteria
Applications will be assessed by the following criteria:

  • Applicant’s interest and/or experience in the topic (Global Health)
  • Impact of the seminar on the applicant's professional goals
  • Applicant's plans to use knowledge and skills gained from the seminar
  • Applicant's ability to attend the entire two-day seminar
*Preference will be given to alumni with academic or professional experience in the Global Health field and alumni who have not previously attended a U.S. Future Leaders Topical Seminar.

Eligibility
Gilman alumni are eligible to attend this seminar if they have completed their study/internship abroad program (virtually or in-person).
Technology Requirements
  • You must have reliable internet access and a laptop/desktop/tablet with a web camera. (A smart phone is not recommended.)
  • You must be able to virtually attend and actively participate in all seminar sessions (including the networking reception) for both days.
  • If you log off early or do not attend a session, you will not be invited to future Gilman Alumni seminars.*Please contact us at gilmanscholars@iie.org if you have an extenuating circumstance.

Preference will be given to alumni with academic or professional experience in the Global Health field and alumni who have not previously attended a U.S. Future Leaders Topical Seminar.

The virtual activity will be from 8:00-9:00 p.m. Eastern Time and include a dance performance by Afrochique (African/Carribean), Terrapind Bhangra (Indian), and Avira (Israeli) dance groups, followed by the groups teaching short dance routines.
